What Are Capsule Fillers? Why Most Supplements Use Them (And Why We Don't)

If you've ever looked at the back of a supplement bottle and seen a long list of ingredients you didn't recognise, you're not alone. That's been the standard status quo for most main stream supps on the market. These extras taking up bulk in the mg per capsule aren't the active ingredient. They're fillers, flow agents, and processing aids that make manufacturing easier and cheaper.

Here's what they actually are, why they're so common, and why we decided to leave them out of our Oyster Extract Capsules.

What are capsule fillers?

Fillers (also called excipients) are inactive ingredients added to capsules during manufacturing. They serve a few different purposes:

Bulking agents like microcrystalline cellulose, maltodextrin, or rice flour are used to fill the capsule when there isn't enough active ingredient to do it on its own. Without them, you'd have a half-empty capsule rattling around in the bottle.

Flow agents like magnesium stearate and silicon dioxide stop the powder from clumping and help it flow smoothly through encapsulation machines. They make high-speed production possible, which keeps costs down.

Binders like hydroxypropyl methylcellulose hold everything together so the contents don't separate or break apart during shipping.

Anti-caking agents prevent moisture from causing the powder to stick and clump over time.

Why do most brands use them?

Short answer: speed and cost.

When you're running a large-scale encapsulation line, the powder needs to behave in a very specific way. It needs to flow freely, not stick to the machinery, and fill each capsule to a consistent weight. Most raw ingredients don't do that on their own, so manufacturers add excipients to make the process faster, more predictable, and cheaper per unit.

There's nothing illegal about it. These ingredients are approved for use in supplements. But the trade-off is that you end up swallowing things that aren't contributing anything to the product itself. In some cases, the filler content can make up a significant portion of what's actually inside the capsule.

So why doesn't Blue Tung use them?

Our Oyster Extract Capsules contain two ingredients: oyster extract and a bovine gelatin capsule shell. That's it.

No magnesium stearate. No silicon dioxide. No maltodextrin. No rice flour. We specifically went out of our way to find a manufacturer who would produce them for us without a fuss (harder than it seems to find!).

We went this route for a simple reason. If you're paying for oyster extract, every milligram inside that capsule should be oyster extract.

Our extract is made from fresh Japanese Magaki oysters. It's processed using high-pressure enzymatic extraction at 60 MPa, which breaks the proteins down into peptides while keeping the zinc, taurine, glycogen, and trace minerals intact. The resulting powder is dense and consistent enough to encapsulate cleanly without any fillers or flow agents.

How to check what's in your supplements

Next time you pick up a supplement bottle, flip it over and read past the "active ingredients" section. Look at the part labelled "other ingredients" or "excipients." That's where the fillers live.

Common ones to look for:

  • Magnesium stearate (flow agent)
  • Silicon dioxide (anti-caking)
  • Microcrystalline cellulose (bulking)
  • Maltodextrin (bulking/filler)
  • Rice flour (cheap filler)
  • Titanium dioxide (colourant)

None of these are necessarily considered harmful. But they're also not what you're buying the product for. The fewer of them between you and the actual ingredient, the better.
